Anthropic Launches New Institute to Tackle AI's Societal Challenges
![]()
Anthropic is making a significant move to proactively address the profound societal impacts of rapidly advancing AI, announcing the launch of The Anthropic Institute today, March 11, 2026. This new initiative is designed to research, understand, and provide crucial information to both researchers and the public as the world transitions towards increasingly powerful AI systems.
Navigating AI's Accelerated Future
Anthropic believes that AI development is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, with "far more dramatic progress" anticipated in just the next two years. This conviction underscores the urgency behind establishing The Anthropic Institute. As Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei articulated in his essay, Machines of Loving Grace, extremely powerful AI is arriving sooner than many expect. This rapid evolution brings with it massive challenges: how AI will reshape economies and jobs, the new threats it might introduce, how to define the "values" of AI systems, and critical questions around governance as AI systems potentially achieve recursive self-improvement. The Institute aims to shine a light on these complex issues from its unique vantage point as a builder of frontier AI systems.
A Dedicated Interdisciplinary Effort
The Anthropic Institute will be led by co-founder Jack Clark, who is stepping into a new role as Anthropic's Head of Public Benefit. This interdisciplinary effort brings together machine learning engineers, economists, and social scientists. It integrates and expands three existing Anthropic research teams:
- The Frontier Red Team, which stress-tests AI systems to understand the limits of their capabilities.
- The Societal Impacts team, which studies real-world AI usage.
- The Economic Research team, which tracks AI's impact on jobs and the broader economy.
Beyond these established teams, the Institute will incubate new groups focusing on crucial areas like forecasting AI progress and understanding how powerful AI will interact with the legal system. To bolster this mission, Anthropic has made several key founding hires. Matt Botvinick, a Resident Fellow at Yale Law School, joins to lead work on AI and the rule of law. Anton Korinek, on leave from his role as Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia, will lead an effort within Economic Research studying how transformative AI could reshape economic activity. Zoë Hitzig, previously from OpenAI, will connect the economics work directly to model training and development.
Strengthening Public Policy
Alongside the Institute's launch, Anthropic is also significantly expanding its Public Policy organization, led by Sarah Heck. This team will focus on key policy areas where Anthropic has defined priorities and perspectives, including model safety and transparency, energy ratepayer protections, infrastructure investments, export controls, and promoting democratic leadership in AI. This expansion highlights Anthropic's commitment to informing and shaping AI governance globally, with plans to open its first office in Washington D.C. this spring.
The Anthropic Institute represents a proactive and serious commitment by Anthropic to openly report on what they are learning as they develop cutting-edge AI, and to partner with external audiences to address the associated risks and opportunities.

What This Means for the AI Ecosystem
This move by Anthropic signals a deepening commitment from frontier AI developers to engage with the broader societal implications of their work. For researchers, policymakers, and the public, The Anthropic Institute aims to be a vital source of information, offering insights derived directly from the AI development process itself. This transparency could foster more informed discussions and help shape responsible AI governance frameworks worldwide. For those interested in contributing to these critical discussions, Anthropic is actively hiring for various roles within the Institute and its policy teams.
