Anthropic & Australian Government Sign MOU for AI Safety & Research

Today marks a significant step forward for AI safety and innovation in the Asia-Pacific region! Anthropic, a leading AI safety and research company, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian government to foster collaboration on AI safety research and support Australia's comprehensive National AI Plan. The agreement was formalized during a visit to Canberra by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who met with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

This landmark partnership isn't just about high-level agreements; it also includes a concrete AUD$3 million investment in partnerships with prominent Australian research institutions. These collaborations aim to leverage Anthropic's Claude AI models to improve disease diagnosis and treatment, while also bolstering computer science education and research across the nation.

A Foundation for Responsible AI Development

Central to this MOU is a commitment to working closely with Australia’s AI Safety Institute. Anthropic will share its findings on emerging model capabilities and potential risks, participate in joint safety and security evaluations, and collaborate on research with Australian academic institutions. This collaborative approach mirrors existing arrangements Anthropic has with safety institutes in the US, UK, and Japan, which have proven instrumental in helping governments gain an independent understanding of frontier AI's trajectory and assisting developers in enhancing model safety. You can find the full details of the official MOU document here.

The agreement also includes sharing data from the Anthropic Economic Index with the Australian government. This will help track AI adoption across key economic sectors, assess its broader economic impacts, and understand the implications for the workforce. Initial focus areas will include natural resources, agriculture, healthcare, and financial services. Australia is already an advanced user of AI; recent Economic Index data highlights that Australians use Claude for a broader and more diverse range of tasks than most countries, making them the most diverse among English-speaking nations in their collaborative use of AI for sophisticated tasks, from management to life sciences. More insights into how Australians are engaging with AI can be found on the country usage page.

Furthermore, in alignment with Australia’s National AI Plan, Anthropic is exploring significant investments in data center infrastructure and energy across the country. These potential investments will align with the government's recently announced expectations for data centers and AI infrastructure developers.

Accelerating Science and Innovation with Claude

Building on its belief in AI's potential to accelerate scientific progress, Anthropic is extending its "AI for Science" program to Australia. This initiative kicks off with an AUD$3 million investment in Claude API credits for four leading institutions tackling some of humanity's most pressing challenges. Learn more about the AI for Science program.

New partnerships include:

  • Australian National University (ANU): Claude will be used by the John Curtin School of Medical Research to analyze genetic sequencing data for rare diseases and embedded into new courses at the ANU School of Computing to train future developers and scientists.
  • Garvan Institute of Medical Research: Claude will accelerate genomic discovery in projects focused on translating human genetic variation into disease insights and automating complex genetic analysis for diagnosing rare genetic conditions in children (in partnership with UNSW and the Centre for Population Genomics).
  • Murdoch Children’s Research Institute: Claude will be applied to its stem cell medicine program to improve the identification of therapeutic targets for childhood heart disease. This institute also partners with Garvan on the Centre for Population Genomics initiative.
  • Curtin Institute for Data Science (Curtin University): Australia's largest university-based data science research institute will use Claude to scale academic collaborations and support research across health sciences, humanities, business, law, science, and engineering.

In addition to these research partnerships, Anthropic is also launching its first deep tech startup API credit program for VC-backed startups in areas like drug discovery, materials science, climate modeling, and medical diagnostics. Eligible companies can receive up to USD$50,000 (approximately AUD$72,000) in API credits to build with Claude, alongside valuable resources and community support. This initiative further supports Australia’s National AI Plan and the vibrant local startup ecosystem.
